The 15-year-old was knock out by Hawaiian Carissa Moore in improving conditions at New Plymouth's Fitzroy Beach in New Zealand.
The former Taranaki local had the better of the early exchanges with a 6.5 score trumping Moore's 5.83.
The turning point came about midway through the contest when Carissa scored an 8.73, leaving Mason requiring a score of 8.07 to regain the lead.
With Moore enjoying priority, the Hawaii was able to manage the remainder of the semi, forcing Mason to hunt down an elusive highscoring wave.
Mason said she had enjoyed the 2m offshore conditions "the swell cleaned up heaps and the waves got a lot better," but curiously said she had no specific game plan going into the semi.
"Just go out there and get some waves," her simply strategy.
Although Mason admitted she was a bit disappointed to have been eliminated she has had an amazing week, winning the NZ Women's Open -- to earn a wildcard into the ASP Women's World Tour event -- and the Australasian Junior Pro.
"It's been such a great week for me. To get to the semis, I'm just so stoked."
And now she's got a taste Mason now has her sights set on a place on the so-called Dream Tour.
Girls be warned.
